Shop Small Saturday in Sunbury: Why Keeping Your Dollar Local Matters Downtown Sunbury to Host “Shop Small Saturday Kickoff” to Support Shopping Small this Holiday Season
SUNBURY, PA – November 18, 2025 Sunbury’s Revitalization, Inc. (SRI) is excited to announce its “Shop Small Saturday Kickoff,” happening on Saturday, November 29, 2025, throughout Downtown Sunbury. The event encourages residents and visitors to check out Sunbury’s locally owned stores and dining spots as part of Small Business Saturday, a national movement that reminds people to support small businesses during the holiday season and all year long. As Sunbury continues to rebuild and grow its downtown, this event highlights how important it is to keep our spending local.
The Kickoff Event will take place at the Sunbury Market House from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and will include free tote bags for shoppers, the launch of the new Sunbury Community Gift Card, and a chance to meet SRI staff before you start your shopping day. Local artisans will also be set up inside the Market House with handmade items and gift ideas. Sunbury’s Small Businesses & the National Shop Small Movement Small Business Saturday was founded by American Express in 2010 as part of the larger Shop Small® movement, encouraging shoppers to support the small businesses that fuel local economies and keep communities strong. Since its launch, consumers nationwide have reported spending more than $200 billion at small businesses on this special day. According to national small business research, small businesses make up the majority of U.S. companies, accounting for more than half of all sales and serving as a critical source of jobs and community vitality. Sunbury is at the heart of what Shop Small is all about. Our local business owners help shape the look and feel of our town, and the money spent in their stores goes right back into the community.
Through ThinkSunbury, SRI works to support these businesses by providing resources, spreading the word, and hosting events that encourage people to shop local. When customers choose a small business instead of a big online retailer, their hard-earned dollars help support their neighbors and keep Sunbury strong.
Additionally, SRI emphasized the community-building aspect of shopping small: “Shopping locally isn’t just about the item that is being purchased, it’s about connecting with the people who make this town what it is,” said Sarah Bower, Downtown Manager at SRI. “You get to meet the owners, the staff, and your neighbors. You don’t get that kind of connection when you shop with a big corporation, where your money simply goes into a distant company’s pockets. Shopping small keeps our community close-knit and our local economy strong.”
SRI encourages everyone to ThinkSunbury as they shop, dine, and explore downtown this season. Bring friends and family, meet the business owners who give Sunbury its charm, and consider using or gifting the new community gift card for holiday purchases.
The holiday fun continues with Late Night Shoppers on Thursday, December 4th from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Almost 40 businesses downtown and at the 4th Street Plaza will participate. Shoppers are encouraged to collect stamps in their LNS Passport to win prizes, with the drawing at 9 PM at the Market House. Free carriage rides that are sponsored by Sunbury Station will add a festive touch to this exciting event.
